R Panel vs PBR Panel: What's the Difference?

R Panel and PBR Panel are both 36"-wide, exposed-fastener metal roofing and siding panels sold in 26 or 24 gauge — the difference is the rib profile. R Panel has a simple rib built for general-purpose residential roofing and siding, while PBR (Purlin Bearing Rib) has a rib shaped to bear load directly on the purlins of a metal building, which is why it is the standard choice for pole barns, agricultural and commercial structures.

R Panel: The General-Purpose Panel

R Panel is the classic 36" coverage exposed-fastener panel: screws go through the flat of the panel into the purlin or deck below. It comes in 26 and 24 gauge, in Galvalume or a range of painted colors, and it is equally at home as a roof panel or a wall/siding panel.

R Panel starts at $4.46/ft in 26 gauge Galvalume and runs up to $10.50/ft in 24 gauge Galvalume, with painted colors priced in between. It is the most common metal panel we sell for Tampa-area homes, sheds and residential outbuildings. See the full breakdown on our R Panel product page.

PBR Panel: Built for Purlins

PBR stands for Purlin Bearing Rib. The panel’s major rib is engineered to sit directly on top of a purlin, spreading load the way metal building codes expect for pole barns, agricultural buildings and pre-engineered commercial structures. It also comes in 36" coverage, 26 or 24 gauge, Galvalume or painted.

PBR starts at $4.40/ft in 26 gauge Galvalume — a few cents less than R Panel at the entry level — and runs up to $13.53/ft in 24 gauge Kynar 500. It is the more common spec for ag buildings and commercial metal buildings in our Tampa service area. See current pricing on our PBR Panel product page.

R Panel vs PBR Panel: Side-by-Side

Both panels share the same coverage width and gauge options, so the choice usually comes down to the structure and local building requirements rather than price.

Which Should You Choose?

If you are roofing or siding a home, shed, or workshop, R Panel is the simpler, general-purpose choice and is what most residential customers order. If you are building or re-roofing a pole barn, agricultural building, or pre-engineered metal building with purlins on a code-specified spacing, PBR’s purlin-bearing rib is the panel built for that job. For farm buildings on a tighter budget, also compare our dedicated Ag Panel, which starts at $3.62/ft in 29 and 26 gauge.

Not sure which gauge to order either way? Our metal roofing gauge guide compares 26, 29 and 24 gauge steel for Florida conditions. Or use our metal roofing calculator to estimate how many linear feet of either panel your roof or building needs.
