Metal Roofing Gauge Guide: 26 vs 29 vs 24 Gauge in Florida
Metal roofing gauge is a measurement of steel thickness, and in Florida the three gauges you will see are 29, 26 and 24 — confusingly, the lower the number, the thicker the steel. 29 gauge is the lightest and least expensive, 26 gauge is the standard choice across most of our panel lines, and 24 gauge is the thickest and most expensive, used for larger spans or extra wind resistance.
Why Lower Gauge Numbers Mean Thicker Steel
Gauge is a legacy sheet-metal sizing system where the number refers to how many sheets of that thickness historically stacked to a standard measure — the more sheets it takes, the thinner each one is. That is why 24 gauge steel is noticeably thicker and more rigid than 29 gauge, even though 24 is a smaller number.
29 Gauge: The Economy Option
29 gauge is the lightest gauge we stock, available on Tuff Rib (9-5 Panel) and Ag Panel, starting at $3.62/ft. It is a popular, cost-effective choice for sheds, barns, and budget residential roofs where the lowest price per foot matters most. It is not offered on our R Panel, PBR or standing seam lines.
26 Gauge: The Standard Choice
26 gauge is the most widely ordered gauge across our catalog — it is available on R Panel (from $4.46/ft), PBR (from $4.40/ft), Tuff Rib, Ag Panel, Corrugated Metal (from $6.30/ft) and every standing seam profile we sell. For most residential roofs in the Tampa area, 26 gauge is the balance of price and durability most customers choose.
24 Gauge: The Heavy-Duty Option
24 gauge is our thickest standard steel option, available on R Panel (up to $10.50/ft Galvalume), PBR (up to $13.53/ft Kynar 500) and several standing seam profiles including ForgeSeam 175. It is the common spec for larger commercial roofs, higher wind-exposure sites, or anyone who wants the most rigid, dent-resistant panel available.
Gauge Comparison Table
Here is how the three gauges compare across our catalog.
| Gauge | Relative Thickness | Available On | Starting Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 29ga | Lightest / thinnest | Tuff Rib (9-5 Panel), Ag Panel | From $3.62/ft |
| 26ga | Standard | R Panel, PBR, Tuff Rib, Ag Panel, Corrugated, Standing Seam | From $2.61/ft (standing seam) |
| 24ga | Heaviest / thickest | R Panel, PBR, select Standing Seam profiles | From $3.87/ft (ForgeSeam 175) |
What About Aluminum?
For coastal, salt-air applications, we also offer .032" aluminum on select standing seam profiles instead of steel — aluminum resists corrosion differently than galvanized steel and is a separate thickness system from steel gauge. See our aluminum standing seam for coastal Florida guide for details.
Which Gauge Should You Order?
For sheds, barns and budget roofs, 29 gauge Tuff Rib or Ag Panel is the value choice. For most Tampa-area homes, 26 gauge is the standard pick across any panel line. For commercial buildings, high-wind sites, or maximum rigidity, step up to 24 gauge. Use our metal roofing calculator to estimate material cost at any gauge, or call (813) 410-7427 and we will help you match gauge to your project and budget.
