Roof pitch is rise over run — a 4:12 pitch rises 4 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. The pitch factor converts your flat measurement to the actual sloped surface length.

How do I calculate how many metal panels I need?
Take the building width eave to eave (the full width this calculator asks for), halve it for a standard gable, and multiply by the pitch factor to get the slope length. Add about 2 in. for the drip at the eave (more if your gutter needs it) and round up to a whole foot; that is your panel length. Divide the building length by the panel coverage width (3 ft for most panels) to get panels per slope. Total linear feet = roof area ÷ coverage width, plus waste. Example: A 40×60 footprint at 4:12 pitch needs about 930 linear feet of 36-inch Tuff Rib across both slopes (2,400 sq ft × 1.054 ÷ 3 ft coverage, plus 10% waste). What is a roof pitch factor?
The pitch factor converts horizontal eave-to-ridge distance to the actual sloped surface distance (the length the panel must cover). A 4:12 pitch has a pitch factor of 1.054 — meaning for every 10 feet of horizontal span, the panel covers 10.54 feet of actual sloped surface.
How much waste factor should I add?
Add 10% waste for simple gable roofs, 15% for hip roofs, and 20% for complex roofs with multiple valleys and penetrations. Our calculator includes a 10% waste buffer.
How many screws do I need per panel?
A good rule of thumb for R Panel and PBR is about 80 panel screws per roofing square (100 sq ft), and about 135 per square for 5V Crimp, plus extra stitch screws along the side laps and about 10% for waste. How do I calculate ridge cap sections needed?
Measure the total ridge length and divide by 9.75 (our 10-ft ridge cap section less a 3-inch overlap) and round up. Example: 60-ft ridge ÷ 9.75 = 6.15, so 7 sections.
What is the minimum roof pitch for metal panels?
The Florida Building Code minimum for exposed-fastener panels is 3:12 without side-lap sealant and 1/2:12 with applied lap sealant. Below 3:12 you need continuous lap sealant (butyl tape) down each side lap plus lap screws, and the panel’s own approval has to allow the slope, so call us before ordering.
