How do I calculate how many metal panels I need?

What is a roof pitch factor?

The pitch factor converts horizontal eave-to-ridge distance to the actual sloped surface distance (the length the panel must cover). A 4:12 pitch has a pitch factor of 1.054 — meaning for every 10 feet of horizontal span, the panel covers 10.54 feet of actual sloped surface.

How much waste factor should I add?

Accepted Answer

Add 10% waste for simple gable roofs, 15% for hip roofs, and 20% for complex roofs with multiple valleys and penetrations. Our calculator includes a 10% waste buffer.

How many screws do I need per panel?

Accepted Answer

For standard R Panel or 9-5 Panel on wood purlins, plan for approximately 1 screw per linear foot per purlin. On a 20-ft panel with purlins at 4-ft centers, you need 6 purlins × 1 screw = 6 screws per panel. A 250-pc bag of screws covers roughly 40–50 panels in this scenario.

How do I calculate ridge cap sections needed?

Measure the total ridge length and divide by 10 (our ridge cap section length). Add 10% for overlap and end trim. Example: 60-ft ridge ÷ 10 = 6 sections, plus 1 extra for waste = 7 sections.

What is the minimum roof pitch for metal panels?

Accepted Answer

Most metal panels (R Panel, 9-5 Panel) require a minimum 2:12 pitch. For pitches below 2:12, additional lap sealant and a modified installation method are required. Corrugated panels also require 2:12 minimum. Confirm with your panel specification sheet.
