Kynar 500 vs SMP Metal Roof Paint
The paint on a metal roof is what stands between the steel and the Florida sun. The two finishes you will see are SMP (silicone-modified polyester) and Kynar 500 (PVDF). Kynar 500 costs a little more and holds its color much longer; SMP is the value finish.
Kynar 500 (PVDF)
Kynar 500 is a fluoropolymer resin paint. It resists fading, chalking and chipping far better than SMP, which is why it is the standard spec on coastal and high-end Florida roofs. Most Kynar finishes carry a 20–35 year fade warranty.
Best for: any Florida roof you want to keep its color on, especially south- and west-facing slopes, coastal homes, and dark colors.
SMP (Silicone-Modified Polyester)
SMP is a mid-grade paint. It costs less than Kynar and performs well, but it fades and chalks sooner — you will see the color shift on a south slope after several Florida summers.
Best for: barns, sheds, agricultural buildings, and budgets where the lower upfront cost matters more than long-term color hold.
Galvalume (Mill Finish)
Galvalume is not a paint — it is the bare metallic coating on the steel. It is the least expensive option and weathers to a matte gray. Common on barns and industrial roofs where color is not wanted.
Which Should You Choose?
For a Florida home, choose Kynar 500. For a barn or outbuilding, SMP is fine and saves money. Galvalume is the value pick when you do not want color. Call (813) 410-7427 to compare prices on your panel.
