How to Calculate How Much Metal Roofing You Need
To calculate how much metal roofing you need, convert your roof's horizontal dimensions to actual sloped length using a pitch factor, divide by the panel's coverage width to get linear feet of panel, then add about 10% waste. Example: A 40×60 footprint at 4:12 pitch needs about 885 linear feet of 36-inch Tuff Rib across both slopes (2,400 sq ft × 1.054 ÷ 3 ft coverage, plus ~5% waste). At $3.62/ft in 29-gauge Galvalume, that is roughly $3,100–$3,350 in panels (material only, estimate). Our calculator below does the math automatically, but here is how it works.
Step 1: Measure Your Roof
You need three numbers: the building length (the horizontal run the panels travel along), the building width (the horizontal span from eave to ridge, doubled for a standard gable roof), and the roof pitch (rise over 12, e.g. 4:12).
Step 2: Convert Width to Slope Length with the Pitch Factor
A roof panel does not run horizontally — it runs up the slope, which is longer than the flat horizontal distance. The pitch factor accounts for that. Half your building width, multiplied by the pitch factor for your roof pitch, gives the slope (rafter) length — the length each panel needs to cover.
| Roof Pitch | Pitch Factor |
|---|---|
| 2:12 (9.5°) | 1.014 |
| 3:12 (14°) | 1.031 |
| 4:12 (18.4°) | 1.054 |
| 5:12 (22.6°) | 1.083 |
| 6:12 (26.6°) | 1.118 |
| 8:12 (33.7°) | 1.202 |
| 10:12 (39.8°) | 1.302 |
Step 3: Convert Roof Area to Linear Feet of Panel
Multiply slope length × number of slopes (usually 2 for a gable roof) × building length to get total sloped roof area. Divide that by the panel’s coverage width (3 ft for R Panel, PBR, Tuff Rib and Ag Panel; narrower for standing seam) to get linear feet of panel needed, then add about 10% for waste and trim.
Step 4: Don’t Forget Screws, Ridge Cap and Trim
Screws: plan for about 1 screw per linear foot per purlin — a 20-ft panel on purlins at 4-ft centers (6 purlins) needs roughly 6 screws, and a 250-pc bag covers 40–50 panels in that scenario. See our hex screws page for pricing.
Ridge cap: divide your total ridge length by 10 (our ridge cap sections are 10-ft) and add about 10% for overlap. See our ridge cap page for sections and pricing.
Trim: eave, gable and valley trim are sold separately and priced per 10-ft section, matched to your panel color — see our metal trim page.
Use the Calculator
Doing this by hand works, but it is easy to make a mistake on pitch factor or waste. Our metal roofing calculator takes your building length, width, pitch and panel choice and returns panel count, linear footage and a material cost estimate — for R Panel, PBR, Tuff Rib (9-5 Panel) and corrugated panels, all priced from the same catalog as our product pages.
